There are a few designers who we simply cannot get enough of, and one of those is Dorthe Mailil and her whimsical designs for the ever successful Danish designhouse, Maileg.
 
Inspired by fairytales and with a wonderfully creative imagination, Maileg have proudced some amazing products, loved by adults and children alike and that are heirlooms in the making.
 
The mice family itmes has to be one of our favourite designs. Yesterday my daughter Matilda wanted me to play with her and her mice family and we had a lovely time taking them for an imaginative walk around the house, making a den for them in my slippers and using the matchbox both as a boat, car and a bed...

interview with a designer - ISAK

We thought it would be fun to share some facts and sources of inspiration from our designers and will be doing so in the
form of a mini interview featured once a month. To sart this off, we are delighted to introduce the popular ISAK brand.
 
The Scandinavian graphic designer and illustrator Sandra Isaksson have been designing lifestyle products  for her lable
ISAK since 2006. Our favourite product has to be her Numbers and ABC workboard. Not only do these look fantastic displayed
on the wall, but they are so practical! Our kids use them all the time when drawing on our kitchen table or laying a jigsaw on
the floor (it's difficult to find flat pieces for larger jigsaws that you can move with ease).

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the troll filled woods of Tiveden, South Sweden (Mariestad by Varnen)
 
What inspires you?
My children and their needs inspire me in creating children's products. An my childhood and Scandinavian design from the
1950's, 60's and 70's.
 
Do you have a favourite designer?
No
 
What influences your style?
I think my upbringing influenced my style, the wallpapers in my grandmother's attic, the retro flowery pattern on an aunty's dress,
the cups we inhereted from a great grandmother... Being away from Sweden for the last 15 years has made me look back at all
those things I think, they bring back great memories for me and I want too recreate them.
 
Do you have any top tips for when designing a a baby's/childs room:
difficult one... Nothing apart from the obvious...Colour coordinate, stick to a handful of colous, choose quality over quantity...And think user friendly.
 
And to finish off, apart from your own products, what would your top 3 picks be from littlebabycompany's range of products?
I love Petit Collage's beautiful prints. We have their Bamboo mobiles in our nursery. The "Clouds" in blue bedset by Gunilla Axen I love, in fact I'm going to buy that right now from you! And the Eco Friendly Wooden Rocking Horse from Plan Toys is amazing!
